How do I care for my jewelry?

Our pieces are made to shine with you! To keep them looking their best:

Gold Filled Jewelry
Gold-filled jewelry contains a thick layer of genuine gold bonded to a base metal and is generally more durable than gold-plated jewelry. Avoid harsh chemicals and abrasive cleaners. Clean gently with warm water, mild soap, and a soft cloth. Store separately to prevent scratching. With proper care, gold-filled jewelry can maintain its appearance for many years.

Gold or Silver Plated Jewelry
Plated jewelry features a thin layer of gold applied to a base metal. Remove before showering or swimming. Clean gently with mild soap and water, using a soft cloth or soft brush for deeper cleaning. Rinse, pat dry, and avoid harsh chemicals, perfumes, and abrasive cleaners.

Sterling Silver Jewelry
Sterling silver naturally oxidizes and may develop a darker patina or tarnish over time, especially when exposed to moisture, humidity, skin chemistry, or air. Store in a cool, dry place away from moisture and sunlight. Clean with a soft cloth or mild soap and water when needed. May also clean with a silver polishing cloth as needed. Store in a jewelry box or closed container when not in use. Sterling silver is perfect for everyday wear—just show it a little love!

General Tips
Remove jewelry before swimming, showering, or heavy sweating to help protect the finish and extend its life. Proper care will help your jewelry maintain its beauty for years to come.

Is your jewelry safe for sensitive skin?

Yes! Most of our pieces are nickel-free and crafted to be gentle on sensitive skin. If you have specific concerns, feel free to reach out!

Why does jewelry react differently for different people?

Every person's body chemistry is unique. Factors such as skin pH, perspiration, medications, lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, humidity, and environmental conditions can affect how jewelry wears over time. Because of these variables, the same piece may perform differently from one person to another.

Why did my jewelry tarnish or change color?

Tarnishing is a natural chemical reaction that can occur when metals are exposed to air, moisture, body oils, sweat, lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, cleaning products, chlorine, salt water, and other environmental factors. Tarnishing is not considered a manufacturing defect and does not indicate that a piece is faulty.

Can lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, or hand sanitizer affect jewelry?

Yes. Exposure to lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, cosmetics, hand sanitizer, hairspray, household cleaners, and other chemicals can accelerate tarnishing, wear, and discoloration. For best results, apply personal care products first and allow them to dry before putting on jewelry.

Can I wear my jewelry while swimming, showering, exercising, or sleeping?

We recommend removing jewelry before swimming, showering, exercising, cleaning, sleeping, or participating in activities that may expose pieces to moisture, chemicals, friction, or impact. These activities can accelerate wear and reduce the lifespan of your jewelry.

Is tarnishing or discoloration covered under your return policy?

Because tarnishing, oxidation, plating wear, and skin reactions are influenced by individual body chemistry, environmental conditions, and care practices beyond our control, they are not considered defects and are not eligible for returns, exchanges, or refunds.

How should I store my jewelry?

Store jewelry in a cool, dry place away from humidity, moisture, and direct sunlight. Proper storage can help extend the life and appearance of your pieces.

Important: Due to the handmade nature of our products and the many factors that affect jewelry wear, Sand & Canvas cannot guarantee how a piece will react to an individual customer's skin chemistry, lifestyle, personal care products, medications, or environmental conditions. Normal wear, tarnishing, oxidation, plating wear, and skin discoloration are not considered product defects.
